Open-weight models reach the frontier

Mistral Large 4, Meta's Muse Spark Open and Reflection's Beam put frontier-scale models under open licences within two weeks. Vercel's gateway data shows open weights already carry most production tokens. Self-hosting is now a real alternative to paid APIs for coding and agent work.

  1. SpikeAI at MetaNewsModelsMeta releases Muse Spark Open, an 816B open-weight model for coding and agents816B total, 42B active, 1M-token context. Artificial Analysis ranks it the top US open-weight model, though the licence requires attribution and a deal for providers over $20M.
  2. ReflectionNewsOpen sourceReflection releases Beam with open weights under Apache 2.0A second large open model in a day, but with a fully permissive licence: weights, tokenizer, reference code and FP8/NVFP4 builds, so teams can self-host and ship commercially with no strings.

  1. VercelBlogModelsOpen weight takes 71.5% of tokens and 23% of spendProduction data from Vercel's AI Gateway for September: open-weight models handled over 70% of tokens, AI spend grew 13x and cost per token halved.

  1. QwenReleaseOpen sourceQwen releases Qwen-Image-2.1-Turbo with open weightsGenerates and edits images in 8 denoising steps, making high-quality open image models much cheaper to run.

  1. Mistral AIReleaseModelsMistral releases Large 4, a 1T-parameter open-weight multimodal model1T total, 49B active, natively multimodal, and Mistral says it leads open models from the US or Europe on aggregate benchmarks. Europe's biggest open release yet.
  2. Google DeepMindReleaseOpen sourceGoogle DeepMind releases EmbeddingGemma 2 for on-device multimodal embeddingsOne small open model embeds text, code, images, audio and video in a shared space, useful for local retrieval in agents without a server.
